How does a Hilo challenge work?
Hilo challenges take place in cold weather, during periods of high demand. They run from 4am to 11am or from 3pm to 10pm, or both.
Hilo challenges take place in 3 phases, all automated by Hilo:
- Optional preheating phase (4 to 6 hours): The set temperature on your thermostats will be gradually increased to ensure optimal comfort throughout the challenge. You can program preheating on all your thermostats, on some of them only, or even not activate it at all.
- Reduction phase (6 a.m. to 10 a.m.): The set temperature of your thermostats gradually decreases during the challenge.
- Recovery phase (10 a.m. to 11 a.m.): The home temperature gradually returns to normal. Note that your devices may remain in DR/Eco mode for a short time after the challenge ends, as the return to “normal” mode is gradual and random among all devices registered for the feature, in order to avoid creating new temperature spikes.

During a challenge, the participation mode you choose will define the target temperature to be reached during the challenge’s reduction phase. Regardless of the mode you select, the target temperature will change gradually during each phase (preheating, reduction, and recovery) to balance comfort and performance. Therefore, depending on the profile presented, reduction targets ranging from -0.5 to -4 degrees may be sent at different times during this phase.
Therefore, during a challenge, even if you feel the target temperature hasn’t been reached as expected, we recommend not adjusting the thermostats. The thermostats are not sent instantly; the process is gradual and may vary from one participant to another.
