Why does the displayed temperature differ between my thermostats?

Two thermostats in a home can display different temperatures despite having the same setpoint due to factors such as proximity to heat or cold sources, the size and layout of the rooms, as well as the display resolution of the thermostats (rounded to 0.5 °C). A visual difference of up to 1.5 °C can thus appear without reflecting an actual temperature difference.

IIt is possible that two thermostats installed in your home do not display exactly the same ambient temperature, even if their set temperature is identical. Several factors can explain this difference.

1. The Presence of Heat or Cooling Sources Nearby

Since the temperature sensor is located inside the thermostat housing, its immediate environment directly influences the displayed reading.

The following elements can distort the measured temperature:

  • Strong ventilation
  • A draft (door, window, air exchanger)
  • Proximity to a dimmer
  • Another electronic device
  • A nearby heat or cold source

👉 Make sure your thermostat is installed away from anything that could influence its temperature to obtain a reading that represents the room accurately.

2. The Size and Layout of the Rooms

The size and arrangement of a room can also explain a difference in displayed temperature.

Fro example:

  • A large open area may take longer to heat.
  • A well-insulated room will retain heat better.
  • Orientation (north-facing versus south-facing room) can create a temperature difference.

Thus, two thermostats located in different rooms may display different temperatures, even if the set temperature is the same.

3. The Thermostat Display Resolution

Thermostats generally display temperature in increments of 0.5 °C. This resolution can create a slight visual difference between two devices. The maximum difference related to display rounding can be up to 1.5 °C. This does not necessarily mean that the actual temperature differs that much, it is simply a rounding effect on the screen.
