How can I find out the diameter of my main water inlet pipe?

To measure the diameter of your water inlet pipe, take a 15 cm piece of string, wrap it around the exposed pipe, and then measure its length. Next, use the provided table to determine the diameter based on the pipe type (copper, steel, PVC, or PEX) and the measured length. It is advisable to measure along a straight section, away from any fittings.

Follow these steps to measure the diameter of your water inlet pipe :

  1. Take a piece of string about 15 cm (6 in).
  2. Locate your main water inlet (usually located in the basement or in your garage).
  3. Clear the pipe, if necessary, by removing the insulating material.
  4. Wrap the string around the pipe to measure its circumference.
    a. Note : It is best to measure on a straight section of pipe, away from fittings (elbows or valves), as the diameter may appear larger there.
  5. Use the following table to determine the size of your pipe based on the length of the string:
Pipe type String length Pipe diameter

Copper

70 mm (2.75 in) 3/4 in
90 mm (3.53 in) 1 in

Steel or PVC

83 mm (3.25 in) 3/4 in
102 mm (4.00 in) 1 in

Flexible polyethylene (PEX)

75-85mm (2.96-3.33 in) 3/4 in
95-108mm (3.74-4.24 in) 1 in
