How do I calculate the required power for my thermostat?

Before selecting a thermostat, it is essential to verify that it can handle the total load of your electric heating devices.

It is possible to connect multiple heating devices to a single thermostat, provided their combined power does not exceed the thermostat’s maximum load.

 

Step 1 – Identify the Devices Connected to the Thermostat

Start by determining which devices are controlled by the thermostat.

In open areas (kitchen, living room, dining room, etc.), multiple baseboards or convectors can be connected to a single thermostat.

 

Step 2 – Calculate the Total Power

Add the power (in watts) of all connected devices.

 

Method A – Check the Heating Device’s Label

The power in watts is usually indicated on the manufacturer’s label attached to the device.

 

Method B – Calculate the Power of a Baseboard Heater

If the label is unreadable, you can use the following rule:

Number of watts = 250 watts × length of the baseboard (in feet)

(Valid only for a 240 VAC installation.)

Example :

A 6-foot baseboard:

6 × 250 W = 1500 W (at 240 V)

⚠️ This formula applies only to 240 VAC installations.

 

Step 3 – Choose the Appropriate Thermostat

Select a thermostat with a maximum allowable power rating equal to or greater than the total calculated power.
